Beginner BJJ Classes in Berwyn PA

For a total beginner gearing up for their first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes, here are three practical steps to get ready:

  1. Get the Right Gear:

Start with the basics—a BJJ gi (the uniform) if the gym requires it, or at least comfortable athletic wear like a rash guard and shorts with no zippers or pockets (to avoid snags or injuries). A mouthguard’s a smart pick too, since things can get up close and personal.

Most gyms have loaners or specifics on what to buy, so check with them first.  When you try it out with our Quick Start Course - You'll get the BJJ Gi...for FREE.

  2. Brush Up on Fundamentals:

You don’t need to be a pro day one, but watching a few beginner videos can help. Look up terms like “guard,” “mount,” or “tap out” on YouTube—channels like Chewjitsu or BJJ Fanatics break it down simply. It’s less about mastering moves and more about not feeling totally lost when the instructor yells “shrimp!”

When you enroll in our Quick Start Course - You'll also get free access ot our "BJJ FOUNDATIONS" Online course.  So, you'll be one step ahead before you ever step onto the mats!

  3. Prep Your Body and Mind:

BJJ’s physical—expect to roll, sweat, and maybe feel awkward. Do some light cardio (like jogging or jumping jacks) and stretch your hips and shoulders a bit beforehand; they’ll thank you later.

Mentally, go in ready to learn, not to win. You’ll tap out a lot at first—it’s normal, not failure.

That’s it—show up, stay open, and you’ll be rolling in no time.
